Most people at one time or another had a teddy bear as a kid. It is one of those staples most children enjoy, regardless of what country you were brought up in. Kids immediately warm to soft bears, their engaging and friendly face along with a tubby body and cute paws are something that boys and girls are able to hug and relax with. Even into adulthood many people remember their first or favourite teddy bear. Many memories may be attached to such toys, the toys themselves being kept and handed down through the generations, a joyful memento of younger happy times.

Usually constructed from cotton, with a coat of smooth soft fur, this enduring effigy of a stuffed animal has in many ways remained unchanged since they were first created. History depicts that the word teddy bear came from a 1902 hunting trip in Mississippi by the former US President Theodore Roosevelt, who was nicknamed “Teddy”.  A cartoon drawing of both the bear and Theodore was placed in The Washington Post. Someone by the name of Morris Michtom happened to be reading this paper and saw what he thought would make an excellent new children’s toy.  The bear in the drawing had actually been drawn smaller and cuter than it was in real life to highlight the unfairness of hunting.

Teddy bears were born, creations resembling bear cubs soon spread like hot cakes. Today teddy bears are still handed over to kids, and are also used as presents on Valentines, birthdays, Christmas and other holidays.

Some of the first, oldest teddy bears have been very well preserved and become collectable items, owing to the class of their workmanship in combination with their rarity. People have created homage’s to these collectable bears in the form of teddy bear museums, galleries and festivals. If you are interested in teddy bears, or fancy taking your kids to something they maybe haven’t seen before in the UK, try going to the Petersfield Teddy Bear Museum. A super teddy bear festival can be seen from online videos, just type in “Mitzi TV video” to Google and you should see something.

Whatever your reason for loving teddy bears, take some time out to re-explore your childhood, you may just find out something new about yourself!
